A data-heavy academic paper tied the rise of Impressionism to the emergence of smog in Europe; As cities became cloudier, landscape paintings became more muddled. No one wants to hear that art history’s darlings weren’t geniuses, but the research makes a compelling case that the industrial revolution played at least a small role in the growth of the late 19th-century artistic movement.
